You & I Forever

The three porcelain columns reference the trees that I walk amongst daily on Bowen Island. My walks in the forests encourage me to connect with nature. Over time I began to reflect on why people throughout history have written on trees? As I would occasionally see examples of this. What was the thinking behind this now discouraged activity? A public declaration?  Written with the ‘weight of permanence’ adding irrefutable truth? A belief that trees could carry forward into the future the carvers undying love for another long after they have gone? A photo documentary piece that I once came across showed the trees covering the surrounding grounds of a Psychiatric hospital in Pennsylvania bearing words of poetry, Bible passages and anti war statements. Hundred’s of trees were used by recovering soldiers to convey their beliefs, hopes and fears.
